Rock Springs Ridge Golf Club, $$ ($35 - $52) Apopka (407) 814-7474 Rock
Springs Ridge Golf Club has one of the most interesting layouts in all
of Central Florida. Any combination of the 27 holes is sure to intrigue your golf senses. At any given time
you could be transformed into another part of the country with the
elevation change, majestic oaks and well-maintained conditions. Rock
Springs Ridge is a semi private facility with a warm staff and family
feel located in Apopka, just 30 minutes north of Vista Cay.
Boggy Creek (Public 9 hole course) $ ($18 - $24 including cart) Orlando (407) 857-0280. I played this course the last time I was in Orlando. Its not irrigated and the greens were in bad shape. But not a bad place to try to find your swing if you haven't played in a few months, or if you have a few hours to kill before your flight home. (It's right next to the airport.) From Vista Cay take the Bee Line East toward the airport. Exit #9 Tradeport Drive South. Right Turn on Express Street, it's on your left. Total travel distance = 10.07 miles.
Eaglewood Golf Club (Executive course) $ ($18 - $24) Orlando (407) 351-5121 This flat executive course features pine trees lining its
fairways. The greens are small, elevated, undulating, and well
bunkered. Water hazards (five ponds) come into play on seven holes. 6 miles north of Vista Cay near Universal studios.
Eastwood Golf Club $$ Orlando (407) 281-4653 Eastwood Golf club features rolling fairways, strategic mounding, and numerous lakes. Water comes into play on 10 of the holes. Located 26 miles northeast of Vista Cay.
Lake Orlando Golf $ (less than $40) (407) 521-2042 Semi-private course was reopened in January, 1999 by Signature
Golf of Michigan. Cypress and pines line most every hole on this
established golf course. The fairways are narrow and designed with the
smart golfer in mind. Big hitters will not do well on this course. The
greens are mid-sized with moderate undulation on some holes, and there
are plenty of places to get in trouble. The signature hole is #5, a
200-yard, par 3, which plays over water, with two palm trees in play on
the approach and the green protected by four bunkers. Located 15 miles north of Vista Cay near intersection of Highway 423 and Orange Blossom Trail.
Wedgfield Golf CLub $ ($16 to $32) (407) 568-2116 Billing itself as Orlando's best golf value, Wedgfield is halfway to Cocoa Beach, about 26 miles East of Vista Cay on the Bee Line Expressway.
The International Golf Club (1.800.371.1165) is one of
Orlando’s most popular plays, due to its proximity to Sea World
and its location just off of hotel laden International Drive.
But this Joe Lee designed course has much more to offer than convenience.
The front nine is wide open, and features some mounding and mild
tiering of the greens. The back nine is a bit tighter off the
tee, but hardly penal. Miss the fairways, however, and you’ll
be stuck in the reeds and forced into a penalty.
Dubsdread Golf Course. ($) ($28) (407) 246-2551 Just minutes from downtown Orlando, the Dubsdread Golf Course was
originally designed in 1923 and was once home to the Orlando Open where
duffers like Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, and Claude Harmon racked up wins and
legends. The bunker-happy course still maintains fairways that are slim
and greens that are tight and slow. Only 5,700
yards from the middle tees makes this a brisk course. Ask about Monday and Tuesday 2 for 1 specials.
Faldo's Golf Institute $$ ($50) 407-238-7677 When the Faldo Golf Institute
opened its doors in 1996, it billed itself as Orlando's premier golf
learning center and practice facility. Now, nearly five years later,
that is exactly what they are. You can, literally, practice and work on
every facet of your golf game at this fully loaded, ultimate golf
facility. When you're done working out the kinks in your swing, you can
take what you've learned out onto the links. Accomplished architect,
Ron Garl, designed a challenging, 9-hole, par 32 course to test every
club and shot in your bag. After you've worked up a good appetite, out
on the course, you can grab a drink or good meal at the on-site
restaurant, Faldo's Grille.
